At the Shore of Playa Fantasía: My Encounter with the Ara Macaw Reserve

I never imagined that a simple walk along the beach would lead me straight to a place where reality and fantasy embrace. That’s how I discovered the Ara Macaw Reserve, a natural sanctuary that holds one of the Pacific’s best-kept secrets: Playa Fantasía, a hidden spot surrounded by palm trees, gentle breezes, and the song of birds that look as if they were painted by a rainbow.

🌿 What is a reserve?

Before coming here, I thought a reserve was just a fenced-off piece of jungle… But now I understand it differently. A reserve is a home. It’s a small piece of land and sky protected so that life can flourish freely. Here, the trees grow without fear, animals move at their own pace, and the air smells fresh and pure. It’s as if nature can finally breathe in peace.

🦜 What is the Ara Macaw?

At the heart of this reserve lives a very special being: the Ara macao, or as it’s lovingly known here, the scarlet macaw. The first time I saw one, it was perched at the top of an almond tree, and the sun made its red feathers glow like fire. Its wings blend red, yellow, and blue—and when it flies, it’s as if the sky is laughing.

The scarlet macaw is not just a bird. It’s a symbol of freedom, love for nature, and hope. Many cultures consider it sacred, and after seeing one up close, I truly believe it holds a bit of magic.

💚 Why protect places like this?

Being in the Ara Macaw Reserve made me reflect on how fragile beauty can be. Without protection, places like Playa Fantasía could be lost. That’s why these reserves exist: so future generations can still hear the call of the scarlet macaw, walk along living trails, and feel that the earth still has stories to tell.

Protecting a reserve is protecting life itself. Not just for the animals, but for us too. Because by caring for these spaces, we also safeguard our connection to something greater, something purer and more real.
