When I first arrived at Fantasia Beach Costa Rica, the scenery looked nothing like it does today. The place was beautiful—but the shore lay buried under trash, plastic, logs, and debris that the tide had dragged in. Still, I instantly felt that this place held something magical.
With a group of dedicated people, we chose to act. So began a long journey of transformation that lasted more than two years.
A Team Effort to Bring Fantasia Beach Costa Rica Back to Life
We came back to the beach every single day. Gradually, we removed tons of debris, built effective waste management systems, and installed recycling stations. At the same time, we educated our visitors and partners about the value of protecting this special place. Over time, Fantasia Beach Costa Rica began to heal and transform.
Eventually, our persistence paid off. Today, we proudly raise the Ecological Blue Flag.
What the Blue Flag Really Means
The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) and the Ecological Blue Flag Program (PBAE) grant this certification to locations that meet strict environmental and community standards. Earning it means more than just having a beautiful beach—it reflects sustainability, education, and public participation.
To qualify for the Blue Flag, we meet several key requirements:
Seawater quality: We test the water frequently to ensure it stays clean and safe for swimming.
Environmental management: We manage waste efficiently, support recycling, and protect native biodiversity.
Environmental education: We consistently run awareness campaigns for both tourists and the local community.
Safety and services: Our beach offers safe access, visible signage, clean restrooms, and emergency support.
Community participation: Local residents actively engage in conservation and beach care.
Thanks to this holistic approach, Fantasia Beach Costa Rica has become a model for sustainability—a natural paradise we protect every single day.
